I consider myself a skin maximalist but recently the minimalism trend is really been a nice break. Skin minimalism is about doing less with your skincare and gaining the same or more results. Instead of a heavy 13-step evening routine and another 20 steps of totally different products in the morning, most skin minimalists stick to about 3-4 products total. One of which is Vintner’s Daughter.
If you are confused about which actives play well together and which don’t or if you are going through a life change (like postpartum) and don’t want to focus on an hour-long skincare routine each night or if you just want to focus on your skin barrier function skin minimalism may be for you. It is a great way to just focus and learn about one active layer. Ask yourself, what is your number one skin concern you would change today? From there, find an active to address it. For example, brighter skin— Vitamin C is great for that.
Vintner’s Daughter
I think Vintner’s Daughter started this trend when their signature Active Botanical Serum launched a few years ago. For years they only had one product before releasing the Active Treatment Essence. So when I decided to go skinimalist I knew I had to go to the source. I sat down with April Gargiulo, the founder of Vintner’s Daughter, to walk me through the movement and what inspired her to create Vintner’s Daughter.

After becoming pregnant and more aware of what her skin needed April realized there wasn’t anything on the market that met her needs. She wanted a product that had less filler, more results, did more with less, and matched her idea of luxury. The daughter of winemakers sat down and started researching the benefits of plants and was shocked to learn most products were made not from the whole plant but powders or extracts. The most shocking discovery for April was how fast traditional skincare products are made. Usually in a matter of hours! Vintner’s Daughter set out to change that.
Using her winemaking knowledge April created Active Treatment Serum using raw materials, no shortcuts, and real craftsmanship. Each product takes 21 days to create. The Active Treatment Serum was their first product. Created with phyto radiance infusion to capture the oil-soluble nutrition and going the slow route each bottle contains 22 different plant nutrients. With each bottle taking 21 days to create! Each bottle contains anti-aging properties, anti-inflammatory properties, hydrators, moisturizers, and nutrients to help build up the skin barrier functions.
Active Treatment Essence came from a need to hydrate (water) skin. Probiotics created with a 2-week fermentation process pair beautifully with natural plants and oils to hydrate the skin. This one smells like apple cider vinegar but I acclimated to that after the first week. Since starting I’ve noticed a HUGE improvement in my skin’s ability to hold water.
While the two products can work separately I feel they do best together. Active Treatment Essence addressed hydration (water). Active Botanical Serum addresses moisture and acts as an occlusive layer on the skin.
What does a skinimalist routine look like?
AM Routine
- Cleanser (can be the same as your evening 2nd cleanser)
- Hydrating toner, mist, or essence–I am loving using the Vintner’s Daughter Active Treatment Essence for this step.
- Eye Cream
- Treatment Serum — I chose Vitamin C because it does so much. The Vintner’s Daughter Active Botanical Serum is great because it has Vitamin C properties and moisturizing properties along with soothing ingredients.
- Sun Protection
PM Routine
- First Cleanser – Oil or balm to remove SPF and any makeup
- 2nd Cleanser (can be the same as your morning cleanser)
- Hydrating toner, mist, or essence–I am loving using the Vintner’s Daughter Active Treatment Essence for this step.
- (optional) Treatment Serum — I go with retinol or acid
- Eye Cream
- Then Vintner’s Daughter Active Botanical Serum is great because it has Vitamin C properties and moisturizing properties along with soothing ingredients.
- (optional) Cream-based moisturizer Only if you feel like you need extra moisture. I do because I have such dry skin but for most people, the Active Botanical Serum is enough.
